 Is Mormonism Biblical?

Mormonism, also known as “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints” is said to have over 16 million members worldwide. They believe that everyone on earth is a son or daughter of a loving God. But the Bible tells us that no one is a child of God until they are born again into the family of God when they receive Jesus Christ as their Saviour. (Galatians 3:26), (John 1:12), (John 3:1-7). This is a very serious error/heresy that they teach because anyone that is not a child of God will burn in hell for all of eternity! (John 8:41-47)

The Mormon Church on their website states this; “In the spring of 1820, a young man named Joseph Smith prayed to God with great concern for the salvation of his own soul and to know which church he should join. God and Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph and began to prepare him to bring back (or restore) the precious truths and the sacred authority that had been lost from the Church Jesus Christ formed while on the earth. Under the Lord’s direction, Joseph Smith organized The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 6, 1830.” They also teach that he received the Book of Mormon (which we will look more into in a moment).

1. They Have 5 Authorities That They Go By:

  • -  The Book of Mormon- It’s divided into many books with chapters like the Bible.
  • -  The Bible
  • -  The Pearl of Great Price- (It’s smaller and contains their Books of Moses, Abraham, the writings of Joseph Smith, the articles of faith, and the vision of Joseph Smith.)
  • -  Any Future Vision from the Mormon’s president or church leaders.
  • -  The mormons consider the Book of Mormon to be the most important of all these books, it’s even more important to them than the Bible!! Joseph Smith said this; “I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by it’s precepts, than by any other book.
  • -  Where did the Book of Mormon supposedly come from? Joseph Smith said that an angel showed him the Book of Mormon written on gold plates in a language he called reformed Egyptian (Book of Mormon, Mormon 9:32, Neph 1:2, Mosiah 1:4) Joseph Smith said that he then translated these plates into English, but the gold plates are not available now, and the reformed egyptian language is not known. So to believe that the plates ever existed is to put your faith in the word of Joseph Smith and the eleven others who said that they had seen them.
  • -  How the Mormons say we can know if the Book of Mormon is from God?  They say that if you get a burning in your stomach while you’re reading it then you can know it’s from God. (Doctrine and Covenants; Section 9:8) “But, behold,

I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right it I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right.”

2.But What Does God Say In Regards To Accepting Other Religious Writings Other Than The Bible?

  • God tells us to not go by our feelings (or a burning in our stomach!) we cannot trust ourselves or our own heart to tell us the truth! (Jeremiah 17:9), (Romans 7:18), (Proverbs 16:25)
  • We are not to add onto the Bible and that’s exactly what the Book of Mormon is doing because they say it’s God’s word also! (Deuteronomy 4:2), (Proverbs 30:5-6), (Revelation 22:18-19).
  • And if it doesn’t line up with the Bible then throw it out! And much of their writings do not line up with the Bible as we will see shortly. (Isaiah 8:20), (Galatians 1:6-8), (Romans 3:4)

3. Mormons Believe In Works For Salvation

  • They believe that salvation depends on a complex mixture of grace, good works, baptism, other temple ceremonies, and so on. Bruce R. McConkie who is a Mormon apostle and theologian wrote the 856 page “Mormon Doctrine” and the 1966 edition states; “Immortality comes by grace alone, but those who gain it may find themselves damned in eternity.” He referees you to the Book of Mormon, Alma 11:37-45), and then he continues; “Eternal life, the kind of life enjoyed by eternal being in the celestial kingdom, comes by grace plus obedience.” (Mormon Doctrine, 1966, page 671).
  • If they will not repent and believe in his name, and be baptized in his name, and endure to the end, they must be damned.” (Mormon Doctrine, 1966, page 177), quoting the Book of Mormon, 2nd Neph. 9:24).

4.The Mormons Believe That Only Those In The Mormon Church Can Go To Heaven:

  • (Mormon Doctrine, 1966, page 670) “If it had not been for Joseph Smith and the restoration there would be no salvation. There is no salvation outside the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.”
  • (Mormon Doctrine, 1966, page 177) “Believers in the doctrines of modern Christendom will reap damnation to their souls...”

5. But God Tells Us Salvation Is Not By Any Works That We Could Do Or By Being A Member Of A Church, But Only By Receiving The Gospel Of Jesus Christ By Faith And Calling Upon Him To Save You!

- (Ephesians 2:8-9), (Galatians 2:16, 21), (Galatians 3:21-26), (Romans 3:28), (Romans 4:5), (Romans 5:1), (Romans 10:9-10, 13), (John 1:12).

There is much more that we could go over, but this is a few of the major things that the Mormon church teaches that goes absolutely against God’s word. So the answer to the question: Is Mormonism Biblical? THE ANSWER IS NO.
