Created To Spend Time With Him

  • –  (Genesis 3:1-10)
  • –  The Devil sure is good at what he does, there is no doubt about that. Here was Adam and Eve, they had an unbelievable relationship with God. God would come at least every day in the garden during the cool time of the day to fellowship with them. Adam and Eve had a close one on one relationship with the Lord in which they walked through the garden together. What a great life that must have been! To walk with the creator of the whole universe, to walk with your creator, in an increasingly perfect garden! But the Devil of course hates anyone spending time with the Lord, so he makes sure that he cuts of the communication lines!

1) We were created from the beginning to spend time with God:

  •  (Genesis 1:26-27) W e were created in the image of God
  • (Genesis 2:7) We have three parts to us just as God does
    • ●  (1st John 5:7) God is a trinity
    •  (1st Thessalonians 5:23) Man is a trinity
  • ●  Now I love my dog, we have a yellow lab at home. Dogs are called man’s best friend. And she is great, and she is very loyal. But you know I have spent some time with her while Jennifer was out for over a month about to have Jacob. So I was alone in my house with the dog. And don’t you know she never talked to me once? I mean I would say things to her but she would just cock her head a little and maybe put her paw up and shake my hand, but she did not fill the void of human conversation!
    • ●  And so when God created everything: The animals in the sea, the animals on the land, and the animals in the air, not one of those animals filled His desire to have fellowship. They were not created with a soul so they were unable to fellowship with God in the way He desired.
    • ●  Even when God created the angels, God did not create them with a soul, yes they can communicate with God, but the soul is where the emotions come from, so their communication still did not fulfill His desire for true fellowship (Hebrews 1:13-14).
    • ●  The rest of God’s creation can make some noise for Him and give Him glory, but again it cannot fellowship with Him (Psalm 19:1-4), (Psalm 96:11-12), (Psalm 97:7-8), (Luke 19:39-40),

  • What you do not see in the creation is God coming down and communing with His animals. You don’t see God spending time with His Angels either for that matter. You don’t see God coming down and speaking to rocks or trees. You want to know why that is? The reason is because none of them have a living soul! You and I are special, we are the most amazing creation on this entire Earth, in the entire universe for that matter! You and I were created specifically to spend time with God.
  • It can be overwhelming and intimidating when you look at how truly vast this Universe is that we live in, and you can feel so small in the big picture of God’s creation. But the fact is, the whole creation cannot do what you and I can do. We can fellowship and spend time together with God! That’s what we were created for from the very beginning! From the start of Adam and Eve!

2) But sin separates and stops us from spending time with God:

  • (Genesis 3:8-10,22-24) I ’m sure Adam and Eve were not thinking of the consequence of losing their fellowship with God when they sinned and ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Not only did they hide from God when God came to spend their usual time together, but in the end God had to banish them from the paradise of the garden of Eden and place a flaming sword there to never allow them in again!
  • Sin breaks our fellowship with God! (Psalms 66:18)
  • Sin causes you to be ashamed and you hide just like they hid from God when He came to spend time with them. (Revelation 3:20) Many times God stands patiently at the door of our hearts and knocks. He will not force Himself in. And if you and I are not careful, if we wait to long, many times He will go away and not fellowship with you (Song of Solomon 5:2-6).
  • Seek Him while you still can! (Isaiah 55:6-7) But you must forsake your sin! God will abundantly pardon you if you ask Him.
  • Illustration: Prayer makes your soul good:A lady once took her children to a restaurant. Her six-year-old son asked if he could say grace. As he bowed his head he said, “God is good, God is great. Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if Mom gets us ice cream for dessert. And Liberty and justice for all! Amen!”Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, a woman remarked, “That’s what’s wrong with this country. Kids today don’t even

know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream! Why, I never!”

Hearing this, the boy burst into tears and asked asked his mother, “Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?”

As she held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job, and God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentleman approached the table. He winked at the boy and said, “I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer.”

“Really?” the boy asked.
“Cross my heart,” the man replied.

Then, in a theatrical whisper, he added (indicating the woman whose remark had started this whole thing), “Too bad she never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes.”

The mother bought her kids ice cream at the end of the meal. Her son stared at his for a moment, and then did something unusual. He picked up his ice cream and walked over and placed it in front of the woman. With a big smile he told her, “Here, this is for you. Ice cream is good for the soul sometimes; and my soul is good already.”

How is your soul? If you aren’t able to spend time with your Saviour, then you definitely cannot say that your soul is good! Your soul was created to fellowship with your God!

3) We must start spending time with God again!

  • Mankind had blown it with the Lord, but there were some men that rekindled their relationship with the Lord, and brought it as close as they could back to how it was in the Garden!
    • ●  (Genesis 5:21-24), (Hebrews 11:5-6) Enoch
    • ●  (Genesis 6:9-11, 18), (7:1) Noah
  • Living on this Earth with sin between us and God makes life so hard, we need to get our accounts settled with the Lord and bring the joy back! (Leviticus 26:18-20) It’s a terrible feeling when you feel like Heaven is iron and your prayers aren’t getting through to your Saviour!
  • You can get your Joy back! (1st John 1:3-7)
  • Illustration: God Hasn’t Moved:

The story is told about an old farm couple who were driving along in their pickup when the wife said, “We never sit all snuggled up in the truck like we used to.” The husband looked at her and said, “I haven’t moved.”

When we discover as a church or as individual believers that we aren’t as close to God as we once were, understand this, He didn’t move, we did. Our sin has caused us to be removed from being close to our Saviour. We need to move ourselves back into close fellowship with Him!

● Imagine the day that Enoch was called up into Heaven after spending all that time with the Lord in prayer down here? Imagine when Enoch’s faith finally turned to sight! What a day that must have been to finally see his Lord and Saviour face to face!

● What about you? Will that be a great day when Jesus comes to get you and you finally see Him face to face? Or will you be ashamed because of the lack of time in prayer you spend with Him?

● Illustration: Personal Devotions:

In the 1880s a young man who was an earnest Christian found employment in a pawnshop. Although he disliked the work, he did it faithfully as unto the Lord until a more desirable opportunity opened for him. To prepare himself for a life of Christian service, he wrote on a scrap of paper the following resolutions: “I do promise God that I will rise early every morning to have a few minutes—not less than five—in private prayer. I will endeavor to conduct myself as a humble, meek, and zealous follower of Jesus, and by serious witness and warning I will try to lead others to think of the needs of their immortal souls. I hereby vow to read no less than four chapters in God’s Word every day. I will cultivate a spirit of self-denial and will yield myself a prisoner of love to the Redeemer of the world.” That young man was William Booth, who later led thousands to Christ and founded the Salvation Army.
