#016 Was Jesus A Social Drinker?

Posted in That's In The Bible - Podcast on June 30, 2009 by thatsinthebible

If Jesus turned water into wine did he condone drinking alcohol? What is the difference between what the Bible lists as wine, fruit of the vine, the cup, and strong drink? Is it okay for Christians to drink alcohol? In moderation?

Was Jesus A Social Drinker?

INTRO: Always hear from lost sinners to justify their drinking that Jesus turned the water into wine so it must be ok to drink. Before we look closer at this one reference in the Bible let’s examine the effects of alcohol and see what place in the Bible it actually has, not what place we want it to have.
Alcohol Stats
9,000,000 alcoholics or problem drinkers.
200,000 new cases of alcoholism each year.
28,400 of the 50,000 killed in traffic accidents each year had alcohol in their blood at the time of the accident.
500,000 disabling injuries are suffered in crashes involving problem drinkers.
34,800 or more than half of the 60,000 non-highway accidental deaths are alcohol involved.
11,000 death certificates annually list alcoholism or alcohol psychoses as the cause.
2,000,000 (approximate) arrests each year for public drunkenness = 40% of all non-traffic arrests.
$21,700,000,000 latest annual expenditure by Americans for alcoholic beverages according to the Distilled Spirits Institute.
$15 BILLION annual economic drain because of alcoholism – in lost work time, health and welfare costs, property damages etc.
15% (approximate) of the 400,000 patients in state mental hospitals are under treatment for the problem of alcoholism.
OVER HALF the states report alcoholism the most frequent diagnosis for first admissions to state hospitals.
1/3 of all suicides are alcohol-related.
1/2 of all homicides are alcohol-related.
IMPOSSIBLE to estimate human suffering related to alcoholism, from broken homes, deserted families and problems of children of alcoholic parents.
(Statistics used above are based on material in a statement by Vernon E. Wilson, M.D., before the Senate Subcommittee on Alcoholism and Narcotics, March 18, 1971. Dr. Wilson was the Administrator of Health Services and Mental Health Administration, U.S. Department of Health Education and Welfare.)
— From The American Issue
NOTE: These statistics are over 35 years old – imagine what the current figures might be.

Also, according to statistics from Washington, two-thirds of homicides and serious assaults involve alcohol, as well as the fact that drink is responsible for one-third of all failed marriages and one in four family problems. Alcohol claims 25,000 lives each year on U.S. Highways.
Collegians drink to loosen up sexually, according to a sociology report from Duke University. They want to live up to the popular ideal of “recreational sex,” which they are really not comfortable with– so they drink to lose their inhibitions.
About 40 percent of college students admit they drink or take drugs.

NOTE* – In Bible terms, “wine” can refer to anything that comes from the grape. It can refer freshly prepared grape juice (Num. 18:12) or even to fermented juice (alcohol).

First mention Connected with sin and a curse

Genesis 9:20-25 (King James Bible)
20 And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard:
21 And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.
22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without.
23 And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father’s nakedness.
24 And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him.
25 And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.

New Wine Connected with a Blessing

Isaiah 65:8 (King James Bible)
8 Thus saith the LORD, As the new wine is found in the cluster, and one saith, Destroy it not; for a blessing is in it: so will I do for my servants’ sakes, that I may not destroy them all.
Context will determine whether blessing or a curse
Words —-> Wine, new wine, strong drink, fruit of the vine, mixed wine

New wine is found in the cluster

Isaiah 65:8 (King James Bible)
8 Thus saith the LORD, As the new wine is found in the cluster, and one saith, Destroy it not; for a blessing is in it: so will I do for my servants’ sakes, that I may not destroy them all.
Cluster pressed into cup
Genesis 40:9-12 (King James Version)
9 And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine was before me
10 And in the vine were three branches: and it was as though it budded, and her blossoms shot forth; and the clusters thereof brought forth ripe grapes:
11 And Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand: and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand.
12 And Joseph said unto him, This is the interpretation of it: The three branches are three days:

Contrast to:
Deuteronomy 29:5-6 (King James Bible)
5 And I have led you forty years in the wilderness: your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and thy shoe is not waxen old upon thy foot.
6 Ye have not eaten bread, neither have ye drunk wine or strong drink: that ye might know that I am the LORD your God.
Pure Blood of the Grape
Deuteronomy 32:14 (King James Bible)
14 Butter of kine, and milk of sheep, with fat of lambs, and rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats, with the fat of kidneys of wheat; and thou didst drink the pure blood of the grape.

Fruit of the Vine

Matthew 26:28-30 (King James Bible)

28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
29 But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.
30 And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.

Wine is said to be Poison and Venom
Deuteronomy 32:31-33 (King James Bible)
31 For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges.
32 For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, and of the fields of Gomorrah: their grapes are grapes of gall, their clusters are bitter:
33 Their wine is the poison of dragons, and the cruel venom of asps.

Wine of Violence
Proverbs 4:14-17 (King James Bible)
14 Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.
15 Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.
16 For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall.
17For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.

Wine Will Deceive You
Proverbs 20:1
1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.
Creates immorality, violence and addiction
Proverbs 23:29-35 (King James Version)
29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.
31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.
32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
33 Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.
34 Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
35They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

Isaiah 5:11-14
11 Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them!
12 And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts: but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither consider the operation of his hands.
13 Therefore my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge: and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude dried up with thirst.
14 Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.

Wine is Excess
Eph. 5:18
18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess, but be filled with the Spirit;

Wine Will Overcome You
Jer. 23:9 Making a comparison. Not equal to Not to be desired.

Jeremiah 23:9
9 Mine heart within me is broken because of the prophets; all my bones shake; I am like a drunken man, and like a man whom wine hath overcome, because of the LORD, and because of the words of his holiness.
Romans 12:21
Be not overcome of evil, but OVERCOME EVIL with good.

Japanese Proverb- man take drink drink take drink drink take man

Medicinal Use Of Wine
I Timothy. 5:23
23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.

“Brush your teeth in the morning and drink a good cup of cold water to avoid stomach disorder throughout the day. Grape juice is good for you : Some fruits, such as grapes,
raspberries and strawberries, possess naturally occurring phenols and tannins that will inactivate viruses. The latest investigations demonstrate that the grape is also able to kill a variety of viruses, including those which cause stomach upsets and polio. Plain unfermented grape-juice was found to have higher quantities of the active phenols and tannins than wine, making it an even more effective anti-viral agent.” (INFOPEDIA)

“When the first person in your family comes down with the stomach flu, have everyone else in the family start drinking grape juice three times a day. Apparently, this changes the level of acidity in your digestive tract into one that is not conducive to the stomach flu viruses. Since a mother of ten taught me this many years ago, I have never had a stomach bug spread through my family. Not once! (Remember, you have to keep drinking the grape juice three times a day for a couple of days.)”

Grabbing a glass of grape juice will do you no harm. Instead, it will prove beneficial for your body. Grape juice provides various health benefits to a person and this article will throw light on such benefits.
We all have heard of the numerous benefits of antioxidants. Grape juices contain important antioxidants in them which in turn help in lowering the levels of bad cholesterol in our bodies, lower blood pressure, and thus help in attaining optimum cardiovascular health. Additionally, it has been found that purple grape juice can help in fighting atherosclerosis and thus prevent heart related problems.
The antioxidants present in grape juices also help in boosting up your immune system, thereby enhancing your overall energy and providing your body with higher resistance to infections and ailments.
If you are scared of aging and aging related problems like Alzheimer’s, then the antioxidants of grape juice can ward off your fears as having a glass of grape juice can help in preventing aging related problems.
If you constantly feel low on energy and fatigued, then grape juice can help you out as it is high in iron content and is specifically beneficial for women who get worn out easily due to low iron levels in the body.
However, you should have juice of only light colored grapes if you want to increase iron level in your body. Grape juice also helps in lowering the stress level of the body.
Grape juices have also been found beneficial for natural treatment of gout, constipation and even liver disorders. Along with your body, grape juice is also beneficial for your skin.
While there is no questioning of the benefits of grape juice, one should not indulge in its over consumption as it is high in sugar. Thus, think wisely and eat and drink wisely to lead a healthy life. (SPICE DIVA – WOMANS MAGAZINE)

Alcoholic drinks don’t seem to improve the function of cells in blood vessel linings the way grape juice does. And alcohol generates free radicals — unstable oxygen molecules that can actually cause damage to blood vessel tissues — dampening any of the benefits that red wine’s antioxidants may offer. Even better news, for Sanford and other teetotalers, is that the antioxidants in grape juice appear to linger in the body longer than do those in wine.

The Body Is God’s – Therefore
I Cor. 6:19,20
19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

Eat and drink to His glory
I Cor. 10:31
31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

As Christians How Should Our Walk Be?
Rom 13: 12-14
12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.
Don’t drink So Another Will Not Fall
Rom. 14:13
13 Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother’s way.

Jesus Turns The Water Into Wine (Was it fermented or Fruit of the Vine?)
Jn. 2:3-10 Hab. 2:15 Jesus would have sinned
3 And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
6 And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.
7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.
9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,
10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.

(1)the people had already been drinking freely of what had been provided(John 2:10)
(2)Jesus then turned about 108 gallons of water into “wine” (2:5-9). Do you think Jesus would approve of a full blown keg party? Did Jesus create 96 gallons of alcohol? (A firkin is about 9 gallons. So if a firkin is 9 gallons and each pot contained at least two firkins, this would make 18 gallons to the pot. There were six pots. Now, multiply the 18 gallons by 6, and we have 108 gallons.)
(3)In Bible times they had no means of extracting the alcohol OR the vinegar that occurred during fermentation. You couldn’t go into the grocery store like we can today and get just Welches Grape Juice. Thus, the older the “wine”, the more alcoholic it was AND the more SOUR! The”sweetest” wine was the new, unfermented, fresh grape juice.

If it was fermented wine then Jesus would have sinned!
Habakkuk 2:15
15 Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness!

Proverbs 23:29-35 (King James Bible)
35 They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

Jesus Said To Be A Winebibber

Matthew 11:19
19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.

They Also Said He Was Gluttonous and had a Devil

John 8:48
48 Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?

And One For The Road…?

This picture is of the back of a beer truck which happened to be in front of RESPONSIBLE-me one day. I have enlarged the writing that is written on the back of the truck so you can plainly see what it says. I suppose the marketing goal put forth by the companies that peddle alcohol is to try and downplay the destruction of lives and health and associate drinking fermented poison as a positive thing, “just try and have a little but don’t drink too much”. Trying to associate drinking any alcohol as something responsible is offensive. Thank you AnheuserBusch for your public service, but no thank you. ~Eric Habakkuk 2:15  Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also…

Is Water Baptism Necessary for Salvation?

1. The biggest and most dangerous example of not “rightly dividing” the Bible is all the different plans of salvation that pastors and churches teach to be saved, yet most use the same Bible. Some say you have to believe but also be baptized, some say you have to believe and do works to keep it, others say you just have to believe and accept Christ as your saviour. So how do we know which one is biblically correct today? Answer: We have to rightly divide the word of God.

2. There are three essential guidelines that you need to follow to rightly divide the scriptures:
#1. Who the portion of scripture is from
#2. Who the passage was addressed or written to
#3. Does it doctrinally apply today?
We are commanded by God to rightly divide: [2nd Timothy 2:15] “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

3. What are the divisions God is referring to? There are three classes of people God deals with in the Bible. Everyone in the world are in one of these three classes. These classes are found in [1st Corinthians 10:32] “Give none offense, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the Church of God.”
1. The Jews: Includes anyone of the Jewish race.
2. The Gentiles: Includes anyone that is not a Jew.
3. The Church of God: Includes both Jew and Gentile that have accepted Christ as their Saviour. Once you are “born again” [John 3:3] you are spiritually neither Jew nor Gentile but you are in the Church which is Jesus Christ’s body [Ephesians 1:22-23] “And hath put all things under his feet and gave him (Jesus) to be the head over all things to the church, which is his body…” So there are local churches all over the world that have both saved and lost people in them, but this church God is talking about is an organism not an organization. We are put into the church, his body once we accept Christ as our saviour and receive His Spirit [1st Corinthians 12:12-13] “For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also in Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free: and have been all made to drink into one spirit.” This baptism here is the spiritual baptism (no water) that John told us about in [John 3:11] “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost…”

4. The Gospels: The new testament wasn’t in effect until Jesus Christ died [Hebrews 9:16-17] so up until [Matthew 28] everyone is still under the old testament law including Jesus Christ [Galatians 4:4-5] and this is why many times in the book of Matthew, Mark and Luke Jesus answers someone’s question about how to be saved with an answer which included them having to do works and keep the commandments. Before Jesus Christ died and rose again, if someone had died without keeping the old testament law and sacrifices they would have went to hell since the new testament hadn’t taken effect yet. Jesus Christ came to His chosen race first (The Jews). Examples: [Matthew 15:22-26], [Matthew 10:5-6], [Romans 9:4-5], [Romans 15:8]. Christ came to set up his physical literal kingdom for the Jews. This is the kingdom God promised the nation of Israel all throughout the old testament since Abraham. John the baptist preached it [Matt 3:1], Jesus Christ preached it [Matt 4:17], the 12 apostles preached it [Matt 10:7]. The apostles all were looking for the kingdom, and couldn’t understand that Jesus had to die: [Matt 19:28], Luke 22:29-30] We must then be careful not to get our plan of salvation from the Gospels since the majority of it was to the Jews and under the old testament law. We can still find many church age doctrines in the gospels such as “ye must be born again”, but because Christ first came to set up His kingdom, much of it has to do with the Kingdom age salvation (millennial reign of Christ) which you find in the sermon on the mount and also the event that will take place before the kingdom which is the 7 years of tribulation such as “he that endures to the end shall be saved.” The Gospels give us an amazing account of our Lord’s ministry and death, burial, and resurrection. [2nd Timothy 3:16] tells us that all scripture is profitable but does not mean it all doctrinally applies to us for salvation today.

5. So then where do we get our doctrine of salvation for us today in the Bible? We today get our doctrine for salvation from the apostle Paul (the Pauline epistles). Why Paul? Because after you see the Jews reject the last offer of the kingdom in Acts chapter 7 by stoning Stephen you see in the next three chapters three men representing the three races of the entire world getting saved right in a row: Ham [Acts 8:37], Shem [9:4-6], Japeth [Acts 10:44]. The message now is directed to the Gentiles. [Acts 13:46]. The kingdom is now not available to the Jews until the 1,000 millennial reign of Christ that will take place when “the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.” [Romans 11:25-26], [Luke 21:24].
Why Paul? Because Paul is the apostle of the Gentiles [Romans 11:13], the gospel of the uncircumcision (Gentiles) was committed unto Paul [Galatians 2:7], we will be judged by Paul’s gospel [Romans 2:16], and the mystery of the church was revealed to Paul that was not revealed to anyone else before [Colos. 1:24-27], [Ephesians 3:1-11].

6. What about the book of Acts? The book of Acts is a transition book. It is a time of transitioning from Jew to Gentile, from Law to Grace, and from the apostle Peter to the apostle Paul. The book of Acts sends many to Hell because they do not rightly divide. Let me show you what I mean, I am going to show you 5 different ways to receive the Holy Spirit in the book of Acts. In [Acts 2:38] you had to repent and then be baptized in water to receive the Holy Ghost. Then in [Acts 8:12-22] they had to believe, repent, and be baptized in water, but didn’t received the Holy Ghost until they had hands laid on them. Then in [Acts 10:43-48] they had to believe, and repent to receive the Holy Ghost but they did not have to be baptized in water or have hands laid on them to be saved. In [Acts 16:31] all they had to do to receive the Holy Ghost was to believe. Then in [Acts 19:2-6] they believed, repented, and were baptized but didn’t receive the Holy Ghost until Paul laid his hands on them. So here you see very plainly that God slowly transitioned from Law to Grace and from Jew to Gentile and it is recorded in the book of Acts.

7. How to be saved today Understand that you are a sinner and deserve Hell. [Romans 3:10], [Romans 3:23], [Romans 6:23]. Repent of your sins [2nd Corinthians 7:10], [Acts 20:21], [2nd Peter 3:9]. Believe in your heart that Christ died for you and rose again and call upon Him and Him alone to save you [Romans 10:9-13].

8. What about being baptized? Water baptism is the “like figure” of what has happened to us inside. It is an outward showing of what has happened inside of us once we are saved. [1st Peter 3:20-21]. What about [Acts 2:38]? Again Acts is a transition book but many people teach that this verse shows us today how to be saved. But this was addressed to the Nation of Israel not to the Church of God or the Gentiles vs’s 5, 22, 36. This is not to the Gentiles and the question is not how can we be saved but what do we do now that we (the Jews) have crucified our Messiah? Peter preaches now again in [Acts 10:43] but instead of telling them they had to be baptized in water he preaches “To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.” Cornelius received the Holy Ghost and then gets baptized afterward. Salvation now has turned from National (Jews) to individual, and the Gentiles salvation is now the way to heaven. Paul then preaches in Act 13:39 and preaches the same thing as Peter had in [Acts 10:43] but Paul didn’t receive it from Peter but from a revelation from God Himself [Galatians 1:12]. So now there is no baptism involved in salvation. Why stay in [Acts 2:38] when the plan of salvation has changed? [Acts 15] is where a big meeting was held to address the issues that some taught you had to do something such as be circumcised (like baptism) to be saved. In [Acts 15:11] Paul says “But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we (the Jews) shall be saved, even as they (the Gentiles). So salvation is no longer by the Jewish method of [Acts 2:38] but by the Gentiles method revealed in Acts chapter 10 and on. So water baptism is only a public profession of your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and it always is performed after you are saved [Acts 10:47], [Acts 8:36-38], [Acts 16:31-32].

Scripture References in this podcast:

2 Peter 3:9-10 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

Genesis 1:1-2 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Genesis 1:6-8 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.  And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

Psalms 148:1-4 Praise ye the LORD. Praise ye the LORD from the heavens: praise him in the heights.  Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts. Praise ye him, sun and moon: praise him, all ye stars of light. Praise him, ye heavens of heavens, and ye waters that be above the heavens.

2 Corinthians 12:1-3 It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.  I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven. And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;)

Genesis 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

Genesis 1:14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

Genesis 1:20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

Proverbs 30:4 Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell?

Proverbs 8:22-29 The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth: While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.  When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:  When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:

Job 38:8-11 Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb? When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it, And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,  And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?

Job 26:5-13 Dead things are formed from under the waters, and the inhabitants thereof.  Hell is naked before him, and destruction hath no covering. He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing. He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds; and the cloud is not rent under them. He holdeth back the face of his throne, and spreadeth his cloud upon it. He hath compassed the waters with bounds, until the day and night come to an end.  The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his reproof. He divideth the sea with his power, and by his understanding he smiteth through the proud.  By his spirit he hath garnished the heavens; his hand hath formed the crooked serpent.

Job 41:31-32 He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment. He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary.

Job 38:29-30 Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it? The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.

Revelation 4:6 And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.

Revelation 15:1-2 And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God. And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God.

Genesis 7:10-12 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.  In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.  And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

Genesis 7:19-20 And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that were under the whole heaven, were covered. Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered.

Genesis 8:1-3 And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged; The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained; And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated.

Job 38:1-7 Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.  Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.  Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it? Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;  When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Isaiah 26:20-21 Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast. For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.

Isaiah 27:1 In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.

Revelation 12:1-4 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:  And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.  And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.

Revelation 12:7-9 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Revelation 12:12-13 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.

Psalms 74:13-14 Thou didst divide the sea by thy strength: thou brakest the heads of the dragons in the waters.  Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces, and gavest him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness.
